Beginning by researching topics that would have beautiful images and would an interesting read. The topic chosen was the Hamsa. Along with being used in my family, the Hamsa has become a part of pop-culture. This acceptance by main stream media has furthered its popularity among clothing and accessory companies which brings it more readily to the consumer. Like many things in our culture that has turn into a fashion item, it has a past. The Hamsa has a past that is full mythology, history, religious connotation, and even magic. It was used in a number of different ways, not just accessories or t-shirt designs. To fully understand the Hamsa, it explores the origin, the religious and the mythological connotations surrounding it.
While researching the content and images for this project, I noticed that there is a not a single book, at least in English, that explains the Hamsa and its origin. This became a personal challenge for me to explore many different sources on the topic and combine them into one cohesive piece.
